Brilliant Avinash and fiasco during United vs. MCC game - August 22, 2015

I was privileged to witness an outstanding innings by Avinash, thanks to Lions game  in the afternoon.   Unfortunately, the match was marred by a fiasco over a run-out decision which led to United giving a walk over.

United were playing MCC in the morning.  By the time, I walked into the ground around 1pm,  United was sitting pretty having scored 148 in their innings, thanks to good scores from Arvind Sunder-rajan, Sashi, Roshan and Amandeep.    MCC still needed another 70 runs with 5 wickets in hand with an asking rate of 12 or so.  Although 12 RPO is not a tall order in the last few overs, to keep that rate for more than six overs is a tall order since the chasing team not only has to score at a good clip but also keep wickets.  More often than not, batsman go for hara-kiri and end up losing.

But the good news for MCC was that they had Avinash at the crease.   What a treat he provided.  He is one batsman who not only has immense power but also grace.   Complexion of the game changed totally in one fateful over, delivered by poor Aman.   Avinsha creamed three enormous sixers in that one over, with two lofted delightful shots over long off and an extra-ordinary inside out six over cover.  Simply outstanding and a great treat to watch.  He continued on his merry way as two more wickets tumbled at the other end.  It was very creditable that he kept his composure, not going for the lofted shots when the bowler bowled from the capital drive with the wind with him. It would have been foolhardy to hit against the wind since all it takes was his wicket to seal the game for United.   Overall Avinash hit five sixers and two boundaries in his 72 off just 42 balls.

The climax happened in the last over, which was bowled by Ali.  I think MCC needed 12 runs at the start of the over.  It was good that bowler was bowling with the wind and infact for one of the balls, the bowler waited for the wind to pick up before delivering the ball. Very interesting to see such intelligent ploy being used in our league.  But Avinash kept the scoring alive with a nice cover boundary.  A wide here and there and it was left to MCC needing 4 runs to win off 4 balls.  That is when the fiasco happened.  Avinash hit a ball powerfully to wide mid-wicket and to keep the strike, scampered back for a second run.  But to the excitement and joy of the United team, the fielder effected a direct throw at the strikers end.   It is a tendency of the fielding team, more or less, to be convinced that it is a run-out whenever there is a direct hit.  Since the game is winding to such a close, it was no surprise that in one union motion, United appealed for the run-out to the leg-umpire.  From the initial reaction of United players and in fact Sashi, it appeared as though they were 100% certain that they will get the verdict and were all ready to celebrate with a glimmer of hope since if it had been run out, MCC would have needed 3 runs in 3 balls with new batsman in.  But to the shock and disappointment of United, leg umpire was unmoved and everything broke lose then on.

United players were visibly upset and started shouting that this is not he way to win and Sashi was totally plussed and started walking out of the ground.  I was thinking that Lakshmi will keep this team in and play out the game since MCC needed only 2 off 3 balls.   To be fair, Avinash had played such a fabulous innings and deserved to hit the winning run independent of this controversy.

Sashi belongs to the old school of cricket where like myself, feels that if someone walks into the ground as an umpire, he should be an epitome of truth and should remain unbiased. That is the value he brings into  the game and he is one of the players I won't be surprised to see walk out  if he is LBW.  It is for everyone to see his passion, pride and above all the integrity with which he plays this gentlemen game.

I also feel the same way.  One should walk into umpire as though one is officiating a school game played by his children.  I am sure that none of us will make a biased decision if we are officiating for our kids game since we have to teach the value of integrity at all costs to our kids.  Right?   That's exactly how we would like to see every umpire in our league, unbiased

Coming to this umpiring itself, since I was standing almost right in line with the striker's end, I felt that the batsman was in.  If I were the umpire, I would have decided in favor of the batsman since it was not as though the batsman was a yard or two when the stumps were uprooted. It was close and we don't have the third umpire technology and hence it was the right decision.  Avinash also indicated to that effect that he was also convinced that he was in.

I was subsequently told that there was another controversial run-out at the start of the innings which precipitated into this unfortunate event.    It was very sad to hear a walk-over in our league.  I understand how Sashi and the rest of the United players felt.  But at any rate, common sense should have prevailed and United should have finished the game. Avinash deserved this after playing such a brilliant knock.

Although I witnessed only a fag end of a brilliant game, was so happy and fortunate to witness yet another brilliant batsman-ship (after the flamboyance of Arvind Manjagowda in the last two games).

United players, chilling after the game
Sorry United.  You guys played really well to have scored close to 150 and keep the game in check until the 15th over or so.   But am sure that you will agree that Avinash played a blinder and would have got them the deserving victory.

Nobody can fault Sashi who epitomizes sportsmanship and integrity like many of us do in our league.  Although it is not a every day happening to have a walk over, I request the captains to ensure that the games are played to completion even if such controversies arise since we all owe it to this game.  For good or worse, we have to keep the legacy and spirit of cricket alive and such incidents leave an ugly trail for future games between the affected teams.

Congrats MCC and in particular Avinash for that brilliant knock.  In the same token, appreciate United for that tenacity and perseverance as they have clawed back into contention for the play offs.

Go Regal

Disappointment on my eldest brother's 60th birthday (August 15)

  •   In all these years of playing cricket, I can count the number of days where I was so excitingly looking forward to a game. There were two reasons for the anxiety and excitement through the night for this particular game. First of all, with only three games remaining for the season to qualify for the fourth spot, this is a crunch game where a Lion's victory will make it easy for the remaining two games. Secondly, apart from our Independence day (speaking for my Pakistani friends as well), today is the day my eldest brother, who brought so much of sunshine and love to my parents, was born 60 years ago.

After trying to convince my team throughout the season that am a far better player in the middle order where I can contribute for team success, I had a decent outing last weekend when we played against Tigers. Being the crunch game, I was determined to make a vital contribution and present a victory as a birthday gift to my beloved brother, assuming that I will be given an opportunity in the middle order for this game. Although I played OK last week, I was totally out of stamina and was gasping at the end of every run last week.

To make a contribution in this game, obviously I need to run well and stamina will not come just like that. Isn't it? For the first time in years, I did jogging in the morning, cycling in the evening everyday. I was determined indeed to make a vital contribution not only for team success but to present a victory to my brother who is the one put the seeds of cricket, taught the nuances of batting, how to play the game with passion and integrity etc.,

But the events of the day were totally different......

To start with, we lost tamely to MCC without any fight at all. But more importantly, not for the first time this season, I did not even get a chance to bat. Although I shrugged off the disappointment in front of my team mates and my dear Regal friends, it certainly hurt me extremely as I was driving back home. Trust me! it is never easy driving back home to see your family, waiting with anxiety as you walk in and say to them that your team did not win and that you did not do anything in the game. To state that I was disappointed is an understatement since this happened on my brother's birthday. Anyhow such feeling is becoming all too common nowadays. Am sure that there is more than one player who goes home with that feeling at the end of every game indeed. Am sure that each of them is shrugging their shoulder that he is a team player and that he will get to contribute next game.. That's the beauty of this wonderful team sport where disappointments only last a day.

Atleast I can't complain since not many guys get to play league cricket as they are about to reach a half-century age-wise. Count the blessings buddy.

    ----------------------- Lions vs. MCC -----------------------------------------------

Coming to the game itself (put into bat), although Dilanka made an extremely delightful 42 (remaining not out) with some superlative shots on the leg, Lions could only limp to 118 for 8 in 20 overs. Special mention about Anil, a wonderful team player, who drove six hours over the night to be present for this game. Considering that we were 37 for 5 in seven overs, it is really commendable that we made it to 118. Credit should be given to the MCC bowlers who bowled a tight off-stump line with very few short balls. Sailesh, after starting with two short balls that were despatched for boundaries, bowled well to get two wickets. My good friend, Rahul also chipped with two wickets while the rest of the bowers kept the runs in check.

Defending such a small target against a great team like MCC is very difficult indeed unless and until the bowlers bowl with discipline and fielding is top-notch. For the second game in running (after the last game against Tigers), the start was disastrous from Lions perspective. MCC made a racy start, thanks to the brilliance of Sandy, who as usual, was picking up the length so easily and dandily. Two half-trackers were dispatched disdainfully over mid-wickets for towering sixers, He was not done with that as he added one more sixer as he raced to 30+ within no time. Ranjuna bowled well to get the other opener LBW. After the fall of Sandeep (caught behind off Chamika), Adriel and Rakesh continued on their merry way, making 25+ within no time with some nice pick up shots. Game was over by the 12th over with MCC winning by 8 wickets. .
As much as I was happy to see some delightful shots and nice bowling, it was very disappointing that we lost so tamely and that I could not contribute anything despite feeling every inch that this could be one of my days. How sweet it would have been for my brother on his 60th birthday.

But, again, there is always a better tomorrow.

Now it's time to wait for the outcome of the other games over the weekend as United battle against Warriors while Knights battle against Tigers.
    Go Lions,
    Go Regal...

  • Rahul Shandilya Raman Subramanian - we all have those days. If your team would have won, it might not have hurt so bad - I can understand your pain. Good luck to Lions for rest of the games ...

2015 Regal League - Stage set for crackers over the coming weeks

Season had reached the defining moments of the league, particularly for the three teams vying for the coveted fourth spot.   Although the top three spots  are more or less settled between Tigers, MCC and Warriors,  there is major tug of war between Lions, Knights and United for the fourth spot.   If anything to go by what we saw last weekend,  the coming games are going to absolutely crackers, sometimes do-or-die games for these teams.

The three games last weekend were all wonderful and heightened the anxiety for the fourt spot.  The crucial game was the one between United and Knights, where United showed that they still have it in them.   I was fortunate to be umpiring that game, which at one stage looked as though it will be a facile win for Knights after a truly brilliant all-round performance by Kabir.   But, within no time, the one and only Arvind Manjagowda changed the complexion of the game with his caviler and yet idyllic shots all around the park.   A few words on those games.

United beats Knights, thanks to brilliant Arvind M with great support from Aman

  • Despite a brilliant all round performance by Kabir Hussain (77 n.o and three wickets), United coasted to an easy win thanks to a brilliant partnership by our mercurial Arvind ManjeGowda (50+) and Aman.  Congrats United for showing that you guys have it in you despite going through a lot of transition in your team composition
  • Kabir A
    Aman
    Arvind M

MCC beats Warriors, thanks to yet another team performance

  • MCC 175/6 is 20 overs, thanks to Avinash (50), Rehan (54) and Adriel (25).   Warriors were all out for 117 in 19.2 overs.  Don't have much details from the game.  Although Warriors are in a good spot, they have to win atleast one of their remaining games to ensure that play-off berth.

Tigers beat Lions, thanks to the brilliance of Modi and consistent Sanketh

  • Tigers beat Lions by 4 wickets, chasing 135 in 16 overs.

Put into bat, Lions made 134 for 8 in 20 overs. Ruvindra Perera made another 25+ inclusive of a wonderful sixer. Anil Ojha made 16 while the key contribution was a wonderful 34 runs in 34 balls by Ranjuna Weerasekera, who kept the innings together and ensured a decent total. Considering that the outfield was wet, the score was decent enough although another ten runs would have been better. Tigers bowling was good with good spells from Rizwan, Manvinder and others.
    Ranjuna

The match was truly won by an exceptional innings from Swapnil Modi, who scored 40 runs in 24 balls with two majestic sixers over wide mid-on. Amazing timing and was a treat to watch. He was given great support by Sanket, who continued his merry way against Lions (he won the last match, carrying his bat through with a 50+ not out).
Sanket scored 40+ and by the time he got out, the game was already in the pocket. Although Chamika Wijenayake bowled a brilliant spell of fast bowling, taking two wickets both caught behind through sheer pace, it came too late. Mayanta was his usual stuff, picking two wickets as well. Although rest of the Lions bowlers were ok, they gave too much width to Swapnil Modi to free his arms in the first few overs, which virtually sealed the game. Couple of brilliant catches; one by Ruchira Tharindu Kumarasinghe who virtually plucked the ball out of thin air, fielding at square leg to get rid of the hapless Radhe. Anil, keeping the wickets took an exceptional catch in front of first slip off the bowling of Chamika Wijenayake.  Great umpiring by Sunny, who kept emotions in check throughout the game.
